One year of aliens, global citizenship and selfies...

PictureSeriously. I'll get off the stairs but first, let me take a selfie...
Today, one year ago, Mommy decided that time was up and that my turn had come to face the world. Thus, at due day +10, not one to bother with the hassle of being induced, Mommy told the doctors that it was time “to get me out of there” and hence I was born through a cesarean. Needless to say, the shock was quite something when after 40 odd weeks in the womb, spent mostly chilling with Mommy on the sofa, I was airlifted into a cold and bright room by something which could only have been an alien. Dressed in green and with a matching mouth cover, “Frau Doktor Martian” pulled me out and introduced me to a drugged up Mommy and a close to fainting Daddy. Well hello world, I thought, I guess from here on things can only get better…

And much to my surprise, things did get better. As it turns out I’m a rather lucky little guy, who is healthy and growing by the day and I've come a pretty long way since that first day at the hospital. For instance, I can crawl, stand up and climb up and down stairs (Mommy doesn't seem too enthused about that last one though). Also, I can make myself understood (sometimes at least), I can make selfies (well I want to at least), I can eat by myself (it ain't pretty but it's getting the job done) and I can clap my hands. OMG can I clap my hands... Seriously, if there was a world championship in hand clapping, I'd be right up there in the top three between the over achieving Asian kid and that Russian kid who was trained to clap in the womb already. I'm THAT good.

But Mommy and Daddy are not half bad either. They're almost as good as me at hand clapping and overall, let's just say that they kind of upped their game after that rather weak introduction... Sure, living with the two of them means adapting to certain inconveniences like having a third floor apartment without elevator and hence getting woken up to the sound of their grunting and complaining every time we get home and they need to lug me and my many accessories up the stairs. And it also means undertaking quite a bit of travelling, which although supposedly “broadens my horizons” and makes me a “citizen of the world”, includes sometimes missed late night flight connections and jet-lags, most of the time sleep deprived parents and almost always hotel rooms which might as well be described as baby death-traps. In short, by the time this circus has hit the road I’m wondering if it wouldn’t have been easier just to stay at home on the sofa, skype with our friends and family and see the wonders of this world through the high definition lens of the Discovery Channel...

But apart from the travelling and the daily fights for world domination on the changing table, I can’t complain too much. Every day before noon I have received about 500 kisses from Mommy and by the time has come for me to hit the sack I’ve received another 500 or so from Daddy. And as for the rest of my family, my two step siblings adore me, my grand-parents worship me and my aunt and uncle treat me like the royalty I feel like I was born to be. Even the mutt has gotten over himself and these days even lets me crawl over him as I try to get out of Mommy’s and Daddy’s bed in the morning. Yes you heard me, as of six am “their casa” is so to say, “my casa” and I sure make sure to make the most of our daily morning cuddles.

So to summarize, although I may be grumpy at times, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, so go ahead Mommy and Daddy – bring it on, cos I’m ready for whatever this next year has to bring! But first, let me take a selfie...
